"In Antje Dorns series Pupille (Pupil, 2007-2009), some of the cameras she has crafted out of clay or wood and then painted and photographically reproduced sport the names of well-known makes or types - Minox, Leica, Canon - but are visibly bereft of any specific photographic technique. They have the look of archeological objects that have ended up in the high-tech present. With the forms of their housing, they could almost pass as snack bars: both are minimalized volumes placed in the middle of a monochrome ground, complete with label and a crucial empty space that makes any usefulness, availability, or functionality of place or object already seen absurd in its represented, pictorial version: in the one, there is no opening through which light could enter and, in the other, no kitchen where food might be prepared. In other words, we are looking at an apparatus, at a perceptual arrangement that consists of the framing of what can be seen."
